My conclusions (feel free to make up your own):
- PAL DVD looks better live on the screen than on upscaled screenshots
- Blu-ray offers not many details beyond PAL, except the fine grain. Some details look actually better on DVD.
- PAL DVD has rough grain - Blu-ray grain is more subtle
- Edges look naturally better on Blu-ray.
- Unfortunately there DVD has several scenes with visible compression artfacts. But again... in motion it not as bad as on the screenshots.
- Brightness on Blu-ray goes up and down. Sometime it's too bright and details get lost in bright areas - sometimes it's to dark and same happens in dark areas. DVD is much more stable.
- Colors/saturation: not really satified by any of these versions. But I like the DVD more. Blu-ray colors look pretty bleached out in many scenes. Blu-ray got an annoying green color cast in some scenes. DVD got a slight red color cast. Skin tones of the DVD look better imo. Faces on the Blu-ray are often orange or even yellow. Strange thring is: usually when I compare old DVDs with new HD Transfers it's the other way round.
Bottom line:
As for me I don't know which version I'm going to use next time I want to watch the movie. Again the review on Highdefdigest doesn't match to what I've seen. They said the fleshtones are nice and the colors are natural, but they aren't. I wish there was a Blu-ray based on the Transfers used for the German DVD.
